Nurses are a critical workforce in the battle with COVID-19, dedicating their time to protect, support, and care for people affected by the virus in the community. Let’s acknowledge this sacrifice on this International Nurse’s day.

Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti or Rabindra Jayanti is a cultural celebration to mark the birth anniversary of the luminary, Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Celebrated annually and globally in May, Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti falls on the 25th day of the Bengali month of Boishakh. Tagore was born on the day in the year 1268, according to the Bengali calendar and 1861 AD, as per the Gregorian calendar. Tagore was also referred to as ‘Gurudev’, ‘Kabiguru’, and ‘Biswakabi’. His composition ‘Jana Gana Mana’ has been adopted as national anthem of India and yet another great composition by him ‘Amar Shonar Bangla’ is acclaimed the national anthem of Bangladesh. He was globally renowned because of his great writing skills and innovative thinking. The writings of Rabindranath Tagore are a perfect blend of pious theology and the Indian poetry.

The first day of May was made a Labour Day to commemorate tragic events that happened in 1886 during the demonstration on the Haymarket Square in Chicago. May Day celebrates the contribution and sacrifice of workers to and for the society. The day’s importance dates back to the times when workers in the United States started protesting against draconian labour laws, workers’ rights violations, poor working conditions and dreadful working hours. May Day is synonymous to workers’ struggles and the subsequent empowerment in the late 19th century.

International Day for Monuments and Sites, often known as World Heritage Day, is a “day to celebrate and promote cultural heritage, and an opportunity to raise awareness about its diversity, its relevance, how vulnerable it can be and what the needs and benefits of its conservation are.” On April 18th 1982, at a symposium in Tunisia that was organized by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), a suggestion was proposed by ICOMOS that a global “International Day for Monuments and Sites” should be held to celebrate the diversity of heritage around the world. World Heritage Day gives us an opportunity to conserve and preserve our heritage culture which paves an ancient importance.

13th April 2021 marks the 102nd anniversary of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. The day commemorates to pay tribute to the martyrs who were killed mercilessly in Jallianwala Bagh. The Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919 in Amritsar is a “shameful scar” on British Indian history. It is also called a Massacre of Amritsar and one of the most tragic event in the history of India. We Indians will never forget the courage and sacrifice of our martyrs. Their valour will inspire Indians for the years to come.
