May Day, is also called Workers’ Day or International Workers’ Day. The first day of May was made a Labour Day to commemorate tragic events that happened in 1886 during the demonstration on the Haymarket Square in Chicago. May Day celebrates the contribution and sacrifice of workers to and for the society. The day’s importance dates back to the times when workers in the United States started protesting against draconian labour laws, workers’ rights violations, poor working conditions and dreadful working hours. May Day is synonymous to workers’ struggles and the subsequent empowerment in the late 19th century.

For the past 50 years, Earth Day has been celebrated by billions of people around the globe, annually every year on April 22nd, to join together in promoting awareness for the health of our environment. International Earth Day provides an opportunity to raise global public awareness of the challenges to the well-being of the planet and all the life it supports. The Day also recognizes a collective responsibility, as called for, in the 1992 Rio Declaration, to promote harmony with nature and the Earth, to achieve a just balance among the economic, social and environmental needs of the present and future generations of humanity.

If our heritage is what we leave behind for future generations, we need to prepare young people to protect it—and the best way is through education.
International Day for Monuments and Sites, often known as World Heritage Day, is a “day to celebrate and promote cultural heritage, and an opportunity to raise awareness about its diversity, its relevance, how vulnerable it can be and what the needs and benefits of its conservation are.” On April 18th 1982, at a symposium in Tunisia that was organized by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), a suggestion was proposed by ICOMOS that a global “International Day for Monuments and Sites” should be held to celebrate the diversity of heritage around the world. World Heritage Day gives us an opportunity to conserve and preserve our heritage culture which paves an ancient importance.

History was created when thousands lost their lives. Salute to the martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh!

13th April 2021 marks the 102nd anniversary of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. The day commemorates to pay tribute to the martyrs who were killed mercilessly in Jallianwala Bagh. The Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919 in Amritsar is a “shameful scar” on British Indian history. It is also called a Massacre of Amritsar and one of the most tragic event in the history of India. We Indians will never forget the courage and sacrifice of our martyrs. Their valour will inspire Indians for the years to come.

National Pet Day is an unofficial holiday that is observed every year on April 11th to encourage people to appreciate the role that pets play in our lives. People with pets are encouraged to give them the extra appreciation that they deserve on this day. The day also brings awareness to those pets who need attention, the ones in shelters who are in need of a home.

Building a fairer, healthier world

The World Health Day is a global health awareness day celebrated on 7th April every year, under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as other related organizations. The First World Health Assembly decided to celebrate World Health Day on April 7th of each year, with effect from 1950. The World Health Day is held to mark WHO’s founding, and is seen as an opportunity by the organization to drive worldwide attention to a subject of major importance for global health each year.

The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace was proclaimed in 2013 by the United Nations. It is celebrated annually on April 6th, a day that was originally used to celebrate physical activity in the world as it coincides with the first day of the first Olympic Games in 1896.

The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace celebrates sports and their wider contribution to education, human development, and a healthy lifestyle. The observance also raises awareness of the positive influences of sport on the advancement of human rights. Additionally, it encourages social inclusion, fair play, and team spirit.

5th April 2021 –

National Maritime Day is celebrated on 5th April in India. The day creates awareness to support intercontinental commerce and the global economy as the most well-organized, safe and sound, environmentally responsive approach of transporting goods from one place to another. This day marks the journey of SS Loyalty, the first ship of the Scindia Steam Navigation Company, to the United Kingdom. It was a red letter day in the history of Indian navigation.

23 March 2021 –

Shaheed Diwas: This day is observed across the country on March 23 as Shaheed Diwas (Martyr’s Day) to remember the sacrifice of great freedom fighters of India – Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev. On this day in 1931, three great revolutionaries, who played their important role in the Indian freedom struggle, were hanged.
